인공지능 시대, 가르치는 일의 의미 재탐색: 레비나스 철학을 바탕으로

가르치는 인공지능의 등장은 교사의 역할과 관련하여 새로운 의문을 불러일으킨다. 이 글은 인공지능 교사의 등장이라는 다소 낮선 상황적 맥락에서 교사의 역할을 다시 생각해 볼 필요가 있다고 보고, 레비나스 철학을 토대로 가르치는 일의 의미를 재탐색해 보는 데 그 목적이 있다. 가르치는 일을 이해함에 있어서 레비나스 철학에 주목한 이유는「전체성과 무한」에서 가르침이 무한성을 가장 잘 드러내는 삶의 모습이라고 강조되기 때문이다. 이에 이 글에서는 레비나스가 말하는 가르침의 속성에 비추어 인공지능 교사와 인간 교사의 가르침의 가능성을 비교해 보고, 인공지능 교사로 대체될 수 없는 인간 교사의 가르침의 차별성을 어디서 찾을 수 있을지 생각해 보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 먼저, 가르치는 일의 두 가지 가능성을 ‘자아라는 동일성으로의 회귀’와 ‘타자라는 이질성으로의 노출’이라는 성격으로 구분하여 살펴보았다. 이어서 교사의 가르침에 있어서 가장 핵심적인 활동이라고 할 수 있는 교사의 말하기의 속성을 ‘전체성의 관점’과 ‘무한의 관점’으로 나누어 대조시켜 생각해 보았다. 결론적으로 레비나스의 사유에 비춰볼 때, 가르치는 일은 논리적 이성으로 재현하는 인식론적 활동을 넘어서 “타자를 향한 윤리적 책임의 행위”라고 이해할 수 있고, 이러한 가르침을 행함에 있어서 교사가 교과내용과 학생을 대하는 자세와 역할에 관해 논의하였다.
Abstract
The appearance of a teaching AI has raised new questions regarding the role of a teacher. This paper aims to rethink the meaning of teaching in the unfamiliar context of emerging AI based on the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas. Levinas’s philosophy is relevant to understanding the properties of teaching in that it emphasizes that teaching is a mode of life that embodies the idea of infinity. Based on Levinas’s perspective on teaching, this study attempts to compare the possibilities between teaching of an AI and that of a human being and to explore the distinction of the latter that is unreplaceable with the former. In order to do this, this paper first examines two possible meanings of teaching: ‘teaching as a return to the self’s homogeneity’ and ‘teaching as an exposure to the Other’s heterogeneity.’ Second, it explores the attributes of a teacher’s saying—the most significant activity in teaching—while drawing a contrast between the attributes from a ‘view of totality’ and those from a ‘view of infinity.’ From this Levinasian perspective, the paper argues that teaching can be understood as an “ethical responsibility for the Other” beyond an epistemological representation. It provides the discussions on the roles and attitudes of a teacher towards subject matters and students in carrying out teaching in this sense.
