문학 기반 ‘자세히 읽기’ 교육의 재인식

이 글은 ‘독서 복지’의 시각에서 ‘자세히 읽기’의 가치를 재발견하고 그 교육적 방향을 살피고자 하였다. 독서 복지는 격차 해소라는 결핍 보완적 복지 모델에서 나아가 읽기 경험의 질을 높일 수 있는 전반적인 노력으로의 전환이 필요하다. 현재 ‘자세히 읽기’의 개념은 미국 CCSS교육 과정에 의해 제도화된 측면이 있는데, 텍스트 기반, 반복 독서, 깊은 이해, 객관적 의미 분석의 특징을 지니고 있다. 하지만 검토 결과 이 읽기를 처음 제안한 영국의 리차즈 A. Richard는 독자의 해석 과정과 심미적 경험을 중시하였고, 이후 미국 신비평 관점에 의해 텍스트 내적 분석 중심의 ‘자세히 읽기’ 개념의 축소가 이루어졌음을 이 과정에서 자세히 읽기의 정서적 요소, 비판적 요소, 독자의 능동성, 문학적 언어의 특징이 부각되지 못하였다. 이에 독자 반응 이론, 서사 인지론, 탈구조주의 서사론 검토를 통해, 자세히 읽기에서 이루어지는 독자의 내적 과정을 검토하였다. 그 결과 ‘자세히 읽기’의 독자는 텍스트와의 입체적 교류를 통해 특별한 시공간에서, 특별한 경험으로 독서 행위에 참가한다. 독자는 고도의 집중을 통해 신중하고 열린 자세, 공감과 유대감을 경험한다. 이를 통해 자세히 읽기는 사회적 정의에 이바지하며, 직업과 삶을 위한 리터러시 역량이 되기도 한다. 이 글에서 제안한 ‘자세히 읽기’ 교육은 독자의 경험적 질성을 강화하여, 경험의 온전함, 독자의 독특함과 책임, 몰입 등을 중시한다. 이를 위한 텍스트 선정, 반복 독해, 상호작용에 기초한 깊은 이해의 추구 등을 논의하였다.
Abstract
This paper aimed to rediscover the value of “close reading” in terms of the “literacy welfare” and explore its educational direction. I argue that it is necessary to consider an overall transition in which the literacy welfare can be developed to enhance the quality of reading experience crossing the existing poverty relief welfare model to resolve the disparity. Institutionalized by the Common Core State Standards in US, the current notion of “close reading” can be characterized as text-based, repeated reading, deep understanding, and objective analysis of meaning. After fully examining, however, I came to recognize that although I. A. Richards, the founder of this practice of close reading, underscored the interpretation process and aesthetic experience of readers, the school of New Criticism has narrowed the concept of close reading focusing on the internal analysis of text in the process of which the original characteristics of close reading such as emotional and critical element, reader’s proactiveness, and literary language have not been highlighted. Thus, through examining reader-response theory, narrative cognitive theory, and post-structuralist narratology, I explored the internal process of reader who performs the practice of close reading. The results illustrate that readers performing the practice of close reading interact with text in multidimensional ways and thereby participate in the reading activity not only within a special time and space but also as undergoing a special experience. Moreover, readers with higher concentration are expected to experience prudent and open attitude as well as sympathy and solidarity. Subsequently, the practice of close reading would contribute to social justice and become the literacy capacity for one’s career and life. The close reading education suggested in this paper reinforces readers’ qualitativeness of experience and therefore emphasizes a wholeness of experience, a uniqueness and responsibility of reader, and immersion. To this end, I have discussed the pursuit of deep understanding based upon text selection, repeated reading, and interaction.
