Abstract
Using a stress process model, this study examined the focus group narratives of diverse experiences and life's meaning among eight mothers of children with disabilities. Based on the seven themes that emerged, a stress process model for mothers of children with disabilities was constructed. All participants shared a narrative joy and sorrow, happiness and difficulties. The mothers' experiences were shaped by their perceived formal and informal resources, perceived transformation and growth as an individual, and their subjective appraisal of the child's disability and their life as a mother of a child with disabilities. This study strengthens the current understanding of parenting children with disabilities by highlighting a positive experience as mothers come to embrace the child's disability over time and the role of various formal and informal networks in their lives.
