이 연구의 목적은 장애아 어머니가 자녀를 양육하면서 맞닥뜨리는 문제에 대처하기 위해서 어머니가 선택하는 전략은 무엇인지를 자녀의 생애주기에 따라서 살펴보는 것이다. 이 연구는 장애아 어머니 15명을 대상으로 어머니들의 경험을 보다 잘 분석할 수 있기 위해 질적 연구방법인 심층면접을 통해 수행되었다. 연구결과, 삶의 위기에 봉착한 장애아 어머니는 장애자녀와 함께하는 삶에 적응하기 위해서 다양한 대처노력을 기울이는 것으로 확인되었다. 유아기의 장애아 어머니는자녀의 장애를 완치 및 개선시키겠다는 강렬한 열망으로 문제해결을 주요전략으로선택하였다. 그리고 자녀의 장애를 자신의 탓으로 돌리기, 울기, 대인관계 회피하기 등의 정서의존을 보완전략으로 선택하였다. 학령기의 장애아 어머니는 문제해결을 주요전략으로 선택한다. 특히 자녀의 학교를 중심으로 사회적 연결망을 형성하고 집합행동도 전개하는 전략을 구사하는 것이 특징이다. 성인기에 나타나는 수많은 재가(在家) 장애인의 어머니는 주로 정서의존 전략을 구사한다. 그러나 자녀가 대학에 진학하거나 직장에 취업하게 되면 문제해결 전략을 구사하는 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine what strategies mothers develop in order to deal with some problems they encounter in the process of raising their disabled children. The research method to be employed here is the in-depth interview with 15 mothers who have a disabled child and an analysis of their life cycle. As a result of doing such a field research, this study discovers that in the early childhood of the disabled children, the mothers have strong desire for their child’s full recovery and improvement and utilize problem-focused coping as a major strategy, while choosing emotion-focused coping as a supplementary strategy, such as blaming themselves for children's disability, crying out, avoiding interpersonal relationship with others, and the like. And it also finds out that during the children's school-age years, they make use of problem- focused coping as a major strategy, but its characteristics are changed into a structural approach by forming social networks and organizing collective actions. Finally, it shows that if their children reach adulthood and stay home all day, most mothers should take care of them and thus employ emotion-focused coping as a major strategy of relieving stress. Once their child enters a university or gets a job, however, they utilize problem-focused coping strategies instead.
