Abstract
This article analyzes the experiences of returned female marriage migrants in South Korea, paying attention particularly to the processes that influence these marriage migrants’decision to return to their home country elsewhere or to remain in South Korea when their marriage ends. The marriage migration of women to South Korea needs to be analyzed from the perspective that scrutinizes migration as a system that includes various flows and counter-flows. This calls for a shift away from “methodological nationalism.” The data includes in-depth interviews conducted in Mongolia and Vietnam with returnees, and with women who have remained in South Korea. Upon their separation or divorce, these women’s choices were severely constrained by their Korean husbands’ pivotal role in completing the necessary legal clearance and hence in determining the women’s rights to stay,as well as their ability to gain custody of their children. Women who have returned to their respective home countries were stigmatized by the fact they had returned home “empty-handed,” with no success. These women’s experiences draw our attention to the limited extent of the responsibility that the South Korean government takes in providing some form of protection for these women and in ensuring the resettlement of their children, since these women are “induced migrants” who had once were mobilized by the government to resolve the Korean society’s low fertility crisis and to re-align the sex ratio imbalance in the local marriage market.
