Abstract

This study examines how the Jeju 4·3 Incident has been framed in media coverage by national and regional newspapers, focusing on differences in discourse structure and thematic framing. A total of 20,642 articles published between 1990 and 2024 were collected from both national daily newspapers and regional media in Jeju. Among them, 17,118 articles were analyzed using language network analysis. The results reveal that national newspapers primarily framed the Jeju 4·3 Incident within a legal and institutional context, constructing it as part of the official memory. In contrast, Jeju-based regional media emphasized victims’ testimonies, community narratives, education, and the intergenerational transmission of memory, forming a more sustained and community-embedded discourse. Language network analysis showed that keywords such as “special law,” “National Assembly,” and “legislation” had high centrality in national coverage, whereas terms like “bereaved families,” “truth investigation,” “memory,” and “education” emerged as core clusters in regional coverage. These findings demonstrate that media representations of the same historical event are shaped differently depending on physical and psychological proximity as well as social context. This study contributes academically by empirically comparing long-term media discourse on Jeju 4·3 and offers practical implications for media policy and history education that reflect regionality and community memory.
