Abstract

This study examines local extinction not as a simple outcome of population outflow or policy failure, but as a structural contradiction arising from the cumulative rational choices of the young generation. Revisiting the concept of the fallacy of composition within a sociocultural context, the study employs Q methodology to analyze statement sorts from 24 young participants. The analysis identified four perception types: the Regional Identity-Oriented Type, the Reality-Accepting Distance Type, the Regional Rediscovery Practice Type, and the Regional Skeptical Withdrawal Type. The findings reveal that young people perceive local extinction not as an individual choice, but as a consequence of structural imbalance. These results demonstrate that youth perceptions of the region go beyond the “stay versus leave” dichotomy, forming instead a multilayered meaning structure where identity, opportunity, culture, and emotion intersect. The study thereby reconceptualizes local extinction as a sociocultural process shaped by the interaction of cognition, emotion, and discursive interpretation, moving beyond conventional migration-factor explanations. The study further argues that transforming youth meaning structures requires a strategic communication based approach that surpasses simple policy prescriptions. This includes message and experience design aligned with perception types, long term interventions to mitigate structural disparities, and relationship and participation oriented practices enabling youth to function as agents of regional change. Overall, the study redefines local extinction as a complex challenge requiring the reconstruction of regional meaning and relational ecosystems, offering an integrated theoretical and practical perspective.
