Abstract
In this study, we conducted observations of six beginner smartphone education sites at local welfare centers in Busan to explore educational methods for elderly learners who are not good at using smart media to learn how to use smartphones, and conducted in-depth interviews with 16 veteran mentors of the same age about their educational experiences. To summarize the research findings, peer mentors and mentees in beginner smartphone education settings fostered a comfortable learning environment characterized by mutual respect and active communication. Experienced peer mentors utilized teaching methods that understood, empathized with, and cared for the needs of seniors. Specifically, first, we utilized educational methods tailored to the level of understanding of the learners, such as education focused on basic functions mainly used in daily life, education tailored to the slow comprehension speed of elderly learners rather than achieving learning goals, repeated use of smartphone terms that can be used in real life, and individualized guidance by level using assistant instructors. Second, to compensate for the physical and intellectual limitations of the elderly, we suggested methods of repetitive learning and repeated attendance of the same program. Third, to overcome the psychological fears and resistance of the elderly, we utilized methods such as interesting classes, self-esteem restoration (respect, praise), and question- induced methods, and lastly, we utilized an educational method that developed mentors into mentees by utilizing pairs. Based on these research results, this study has the significance of suggesting the following to revitalize media education for the elderly who are vulnerable to digital media: establishing an educational program for instructors to understand elderly learners, creating a forum for information exchange between young instructors and instructors of the same age, developing a smartphone terminology game app for seniors, establishing a digital media education program tailored to the level of elderly learners, and revitalizing mentor education for seniors.
