Abstract

This study aims at analyzing empirically the influence of community organization participation on cognitive social capital in an exploratory level. For the purpose, it classifies the cognitive social capital into bonding, bridging, and linking ones. Community organization is also classified into four categories including friendly association, volunteer association, interest promoting association, and administratively cooperative association. For an empirical study this study carries out questionnaire survey and statistical analysis on 1,190 data collected from 15 apartment complex areas in Daejeon Metropolitan City. The result shows that the overall community organization participation level has positive influence on bonding and bridging social capital, but negative influence on linking social capital. Based on the types of community organization, participation in interest promoting and administratively cooperative associations have positive influence on bonding social capital. In terms of bridging social capital, participation in friendly and administratively cooperative associations appear to influence positively. While participation in friendly and volunteer associations have negative influence on linking social capital, administratively cooperative association appear to have positive influence. The conclusion includes research implications and limitations.
