Abstract
Infectious diseases are personal risks and also have the nature of social risks caused by human-to-human transmission. This study aims to combine the psychometric model with the social representation theory to empirically examine the effects of social representation of infectious disease on risk perception. The analysis results of a survey of social representation and risk perception of MERS conducted on Seoul citizens in November 2019 are as follows: First, othering did not affect risk perception, while indirectly increasing risk perceptions by increasing the possibility of infection spread, the inability to control infection and fear. Second, conspiracy theories reduce risk perception, while indirectly increasing risk perception by increasing the possibility of infection spread and the inability to control infection. Combining these results, social representation, other than the direct effect of conspiracy theory, increases risk perception rather than leading to optimistic bias. Social representation is both the cause of and the cause of the cause of infectious disease. Therefore, the perceived risk of infectious disease should not only be attributed to fear or unknown risk at the individual level, but also to the effects of social representation that permeate it.
