이 글은 김우진의 소설 「동굴 위에 선 사람」의 서사가 ‘융길’과 ‘신자’ 사이의 연애담처럼 보이지만, 그것이 텍스트 곳곳에서 균열을 일으키면서 공포스러운 ‘동굴’의 환영으로 되돌아가는 이유를 살펴보고자 했다. 이는 ‘2․8독립선언’과 그 재판 과정에 연루된 억압된 기억으로부터 기인하는 것이다. 유령처럼 귀환하는 ‘동굴’의 환영 속에서 연애담 서사는 동일성을 위협받게 되고, 그 이면에서 식민지적 ‘현재’가 불안하게 공연된다. 이 환영은 이 소설의 혼종적 시간을 드러내는 것이기도 하다. 아카바네 동굴에서 ‘융길’이 느낀 감각은 “살기 잇고 습기 잇고 동굴 속 같은” ‘법정’의 기억과 결부되고, 이때 과거는 ‘환영’의 형태로 끊임없이 현재에 개입된다. 이처럼 김우진은 이 소설을 통해 제국에 의해 강요된 식민지적 현재를 의문시하고, 환상 속에서 흉악한 ‘동굴’을 함락시킴으로써 치유되지 않은 과거를 현재 속에 새롭게 기입하는 탈식민적 글쓰기를 실천하고 있었다.
Abstract
This study attempted to explore the reasons the narrative of Kim Woo-jin's novel “A person who stands on the cave” seems to be a love story, but the cracks in it and the horrific illusion of the “cave” intervene. This stems from the 2.8 Declaration of Independence, which was centered on Japanese students studying in Tokyo, and the suppressed memories associated with the trial process related to the case. In this illusion of the “cave” returning like a ghost, the love story is threatened with its identity and, at the same time, the colonial “present” imposed by the empire is threatened. Furthermore, the illusion of this cave makes the time of this novel hybrid. The sensations the protagonist of this novel felt in the cave were similar to the atmosphere of the court that Kim Woo-jin experienced, so the past was intervened in the present like an illusion. In the conclusion of this novel, the artist attempts to rewrite the unhealed past and future by destroying the “cave” by light in a fantasy. In that sense, it is important that this novel was created in Japanese. This is because while appropriating the language of the empire, he was breaking the discourse of the domination of the empire through his Japanese writing.
