Abstract

Seoul National University has offered three academic writingcourses since 2004: ‘Writing in Humanities’, ‘Writing in SocialSciences’, and ‘Writing in Science and Technology’. Through thesewriting courses, the students who completed the ‘Korean’ course canlearn academic writing skills that are required in the field of eachstudy. In the writing education system of SNU, there is no single unifiedbody that organizes lectures, research and administration for writingeducation. There are several operating bodies in the system and thecontent of the education varies according to the operating body. Besides ‘Writing Course’ and ‘Korean’ in the official curriculum,there is one more writing course, which is offered by the Center forTeaching and Learning. These three writing courses are managedindependently, without a unified operating organization. The purpose of the ‘Writing Course’ is to teach academic writingskills that are required in the field of humanities, social sciences, orscience and technology. Instructors, teaching assistants and classmatescorrect the students’ writing throughout the course. There are 27writing courses in the ‘Writing Course’ program. Each of thesecourses is limited to 25 students and one teaching assistant perinstructor. The followings are the suggestions to improve the writingeducation at SNU. First, a single unified writing center needs to be established inorder to take full charge of the writing education. Second,step-by-step education system based on different writing levels needsto be constructed. Third, it is necessary to give better treatment to theinstructors. Fourth, continuous research and development for bettercontent and modules for writing training is required. Fifth, thetraining program for teaching assistants needs to be improved to bemore systematic. Most importantly, the university members and directors need torecognize the value of a writing education, establish a clear purposeand direction, and give active support for constructing and executingthe integrated system for an efficient writing education.
