Abstract

This is to analyze how the film <Dongju>(directed by Joonik Lee, 2015) recreated the life of Yoon-Dongju, the character who the film is based upon and the period he lived. The director chose four characters and a group of subsidiary characters to recreate the world of Yoon-Dongju and aura of his character. The four characters are Yoon-Dongju himself and Japanese detective who constantly checks on Dongju, Song-Monggyu who is Dongju’s cousin and a mentor of his, and Yeojin the female lead who is created by the director loosely based on the character Sooni from Dongju’s poems. And the group of subsidiary characters include prominent characters of the era such as Yoon-Chiho, Chung-Jiyong, Moon-Ikhwan. This film uses Dongju’s 14 poems as pivot points to turn the meaning of each sequence and thread them together. This film was shot entirely in black and white and employed various cinematic techniques to enhance the viewership. If you are not a total stranger to Yoon-Dongju and his poems, you might want to bring up a few points to talk about after watching this film. First, does this film take unconventional interpretations on Dongju’s poems and if it does, how does it do and why? Second, what about those main and subsidiary characters? Do they work properly?
