Fifty Helps는 초기 개신교 선교사들의 한국어학습서로 오랫동안 사용되면서 한국어교육사에 기여한 바가 큰 것에 비해 그동안 연구 관심을 많이 받지 못하였다. 본고는 이 책의 내용적 특성을 살피면서 이 책의 교재적 가치를 분석하였다. 이 책은 그 당시 최초로 초급 단계의 어휘와 기본적인 표현 문형을 간추려 제시함으로써 한국어학습에 쉽게 입문할 수 있도록 도왔으며 어휘 제시에 의미장 활용하여 여러 개의 어휘를 쉽게 한꺼번에 습득할 수 있도록 하였다. 또한 기본적인 표현 문형을 연습하여서 다양한 상황에 교체 변형하여 사용할 수 있도록 구성함으로써 학습자들의 말문이 쉽게 열리도록 도왔다. 문법 설명과 수록된 예문을 학습자가 일방향적으로 수용해야 했던 기존 문법서와는 달리 이 책에서는 학습자가 주도적으로 문법 체계를 연습하고 문장을 생산하는 과정이 포함되어 있어서 익힘책(workbook)의 기능까지 겸하였다. 그 외에도 한국문화의 이해를 돕는 다양한 조언을 통해 문화차이로 인해 학습과정에서 일어날 수 있는 불편한 점들을 미리 예방할 수 있도록 도왔다.
Abstract
Fifty Helps was used as a Korean language workbook by early Protestant missionaries for a long time, contributing greatly to Korean language education. However, in comparison to the book’s contribution, its contents have not been actively studied. This paper analyzes the textual value by examining the contents of this book, focusing on the 4th edition. The book’s main advantage was that it provided basic vocabulary and expressive sentences; it thus reduced the barriers to the study of the Korean language. The vocabulary was presented using semantic field, which helped the learner to easily understand several vocabularies at once. In addition, learners were able to easily start speaking because they were able to use the basic expressive sentence patterns to substitute for various situations. Thus, learners were able to involved actively in the practice of various sentences. This book also provided multiple advices on the differences between the learner's and Korean culture in order to prevent misunderstandings that might occur during the learning process. The language learning method presented in this book is not much different from the one used in modern Korean textbooks. Therefore, this book must have played a very important role in modern Korean language education.
