Abstract
This paper aims to investigate the literary–historical significance of Ingwamun(因果文), a gasa(歌辭) work with the same title created in both Buddhism and Namhak, a new religion dated to the late Joseon dynasty. The paper comparatively analyzes the texts and their causal logic and literary representation in both religions. First, the creation and appreciation of Ingwamun is one example that demonstrates the particularly heavy influence of Buddhism on Namhak. The term Ingwa(因果) generally means that one faces a consequence that corresponds to one’s good or evil karma. This concept is among the core principles espoused in the doctrines of both Buddhism and Namhak. Additionally, it is a keyword for mass propagation. The structure of the Buddhist gasa Ingwamun consistently emphasizes eop-in-eop-gwa(業因業果), based on the human experiences of birth, aging, sickness, death, and cyclical samsara(輪廻). It develops the logic that meritorious deeds performed in the present life, such as chanting the name of the Buddha, lead to rebirth in the Pure Land in the next life. Contrastingly, the Namhak gasa Ingwamun partially accepts the traditional logic of eop-in-eop-gwa(業因業果), while also presenting a complex causal logic of yu-in-bul-gwa(儒因佛果) on a relatively macroscopic level. This reflects the intention of Namhak, despite the influence of Buddhist doctrines and thought, to embody the ideal of salvation in the present world. The pattern of the creation and appreciation of Ingwamun(因果文) is important because it provides one of few literary examples directly showing the complexly intertwined relationship between the religions of the time. Furthermore, evidence of this influence in the gasa works demonstrates that the transmission of the Buddhist gasa Ingwamun(因果文) was not limited to the internal sphere of Buddhism but rather occurred in connection with other religions.
