Abstract

This study re-examines late Joseon female hero novels from the psychoanalytic perspective of ‘hysteria’ to investigate the gender trouble manifested within them. In I hyeonggyeong-jeon, the somatic symptoms of fainting and illness, which appear during the crisis of identity exposure, represent a classic case of conversion hysteria where the repressed truth is manifested through the body. In the case of Hong Gye-wol-jeon, the conflict arising from the dual post-marital positions of ‘wife’ and ‘general’ is highlighted through scenes of Gye-wol’s excessive behavior. This excess is interpreted not merely as a radical personality trait but as a consequence revealing the impossibility of gender performance. Finally, in Bang Hanrim-jeon, the narrative unfolds with the protagonist maintaining her masculinity, where Bang Hanrim’s contradictory speech and actions are observed as an attitudinal symptom. This demonstrates the potential for reinterpreting aspects, previously evaluated simply as ‘duality’ in existing research, through the new analytical framework of hysteria. These findings offer several implications. First, they allow for an understanding of the characters in female hero novels not simply as heroes or resistant figures, but as subjects living with internal schisms and anxiety. Second, although the symptomatic patterns differ across the works, they all stem from the crisis and anxiety of gender performance, thereby confirming a shared narrative characteristic of these novels. Third, this study’s psychoanalytic approach is not confined to these specific texts but presents an analytical framework applicable to other classic novel genres, offering a noteworthy contribution to the field.
