Abstract

The Development of Fiction Criticism and Literary Aestheticism in the Late Joseon Dynasty －Related with the Reading of Fiction Commentary by Jin, Sheng-tan－ Jeung, Sun-hee The present study discusses the advancement of fiction criticism and literary aestheticism in the Joseon Dynasty propelled by the reading of the fiction commentary of Jin, Sheng-tan (金聖歎, 1608-1661), a Chinese editor, writer and critic who lived from the late Ming until the early Qing Dynasty. Jin's fiction commentary had many devoted readers in the literary circles of the Joseon Dynasty in the 18th-19th centuries. First, this study examines how Jin's commentary was read, evaluated and accepted by Joseon's literary scholars. Next, in an attempt to review the practical influence of the reading practice and the contact with fiction criticism on the Korean fictions, the study analyzes Gwanghallugi, or The Romance of Gwanghallu Pavilion, which was adapted in classical Chinse from the Korean fiction Chunhyangjeon, or The Story of Chunhyang, with commentaries added. Finally, this study confirms that the fiction criticism in the late Joseon Dynasty developed with the help of both the internal cause--i.e. the accumulation of the spontaneous fiction-writing tradition--and the acceptance and modifi- cation of foreign culture through reading.
