Abstract
The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries were a time when the consciousness of literati official was transformed with the influx of Chinese literature into Korea. Chinese literature was imported in particularly great numbers, affecting the literature of late Chosŏn after the writers read these Chinese works. While this phenomenon was most notable in the area of fictional narratives in general, this study will examine the trajectory of Kim Sŏngt'an's work, a reknowned critic of Chinese fiction, and look at the impressions and thoughts of his readers as evidence in their writings. After examining about thirty literary collections of various writers of the 17th and 18th centuries, it generally appears that read approximately thirty books from China on the classics, philosophy, theory or history, but few fictional works. However, this is largely interpreted as a result of the ban on importing and reading Chinese fiction(called munch'e panjŏng, 文體反正) by King Chŏngjo which merely prevented writers from recording them in their collections. Based on records regarding a few fictional works, it appears that Kim Sŏngt'an's critiques of Chinese literature caused a great sensation among a broad readership. Some people were so embedded in his writing that people were incapable of doing anything else. His books were read multiple times, copied and praised for his delicacy and professionalism. On the basis of actual conditions of reading and discussion on Kim Sŏngt'an's literary critiques by writers in the late Chosŏn, further research will explore the way in which this type of literature was actualized and theorized by later writers.
