Abstract

We have been studying the grammar category in a broad sense as a comprehensive concept. In the meantime we regarded aspect category, des- ignation category, time category, quantity category as semantic category or conceptual category and have been researching on this. It is discussed in the dissertation that we should pull all of the categories to the level of category of grammar and study them as semantic category of semantic grammar compared with category of grammar of formality of grammar. Firstly, we research on the grammar to make the communication in- cluding understanding and expressing which is the basic function of lan- guage. And we can make form and contents the starting point and the central point because of the relation between formality of grammar and contents of grammar. So the formal approach from formality to content is in complementary relations with the semantic approach from content to formality. The appropriateness of both approaches of grammar studies has been emphasized here. Secondly, the system of grammar categories of Korean can be sub- classified by dichotomy as formal grammar and semantic grammar. The semantic category of semantic grammar can be divided into semantic qual- itative category and semantic relational category. Once again, splitting the semantic qualitative category and semantic relational category by words and phrases influences on the grammar structure(form structure or syntax structure) then effectuates the difference of syntactic characteristics. The attempt to establish a system of semantic category of semantic grammar has been done here.
