이 연구는 근대 계몽기에 출간된 한국어 문법 활용 사전 중 하나로 볼 수 있는 <Terminations of the verb ᄒᆞ다(1896)>의 巨視的 특징과 그 자료적 가치를 밝힌 것이다. 이 자료는 <한불ᄌᆞ뎐(1880)>에 수록되어 있는 부록의 일부를 영어로 번역한 것이나 일부 내용이 改定되어 있다. 구체적으로는 외형상 특징, 제공되는 정보상 특징, 표제항 구성상 특징에 대해서 살펴보았으며 이를 통하여 <한불ᄌᆞ뎐>의 附錄을 번역하여 <Terminations of the verb ᄒᆞ다(1896)>를 出刊한 것으로 여겨지는 당시 영국 宣敎師들이 상당한 수준의 한국어 능력 및 한국어에 대한 言語學的 지식을 갖추고 있었을 것이라는 점을 주장하였다. 본 연구는 또한 <한불ᄌᆞ뎐(1880)>의 부록 중 문법 부분과 그를 번역한 자료인 <Terminations of the verb ᄒᆞ다(1896)>가 19세기 말에 編纂된 일종의 ‘한국어 문법 사전’으로서 갖는 意義에 주목하였는데 이는 近代 계몽기에 외국인에 의하여 편찬된 한국어 학습서 및 敎材類에 대한 연구에 문법 사전류에 대한 연구가 추가되어야 할 필요를 提起한다.
Abstract
This study reveals the macroscopic characteristics and the values of <Terminations of the verb ᄒᆞ다 (1896)>, which can be regarded as one of the Korean grammar conjugation dictionary published in the modern enlightenment period. This is a translation of some of the appendixes listed in <한불ᄌᆞ뎐 (1880)> into English by missionaries in the English Holy Church, but some contents have been revised. In this study, it is described that this material has the value of its own by explaining the difference with <한불ᄌᆞ뎐>. Specifically, the outline feature, the provided information feature, and the feature of the headwords entry were examined. Thus, it was argued that the British episcopalians who were supposed to have published <Terminations of the verb ᄒᆞ다(1896)> had already had a considerable level of Korean ability and linguistic knowledge of Korean. This study also paid attention to the meaning of the grammar part of the <한불ᄌᆞ뎐> and <Terminations of the verb ᄒᆞ다(1896)>, as a kind of ‘Korean grammar dictionary’ compiled at the end of the 19th century, And the study of grammar dictionary should be added to the study of textbooks and workbooks.
