Abstract
Through the enlightenment period of the late 19th century, Korea was greatly helped by the newly invented Sino-Korean words in the process of modernization, which included and accepted the name of Western culture and products. These newly coined words appeared in China from the early 17th century, with Japanese intellectuals putting more effort into the creation of new Chinese words as same as Sino-Korean words. As a result, new Chinese words such as ‘Mi-Sul(美術, arts), Ja-Yu(自由, freedom), and Byeong-Won(病院, Hospital)’ were born. These new Chinese(=Sino-Korean) words are divided into three types. The first are two-syllable Chinese(=Sino-Korean) words that appears in Chinese classic books that has been used as a translation for Western culture, including ‘Kyung-Je(經濟, economics), Sa-Hoe(社會, social), Sin-Mun(新聞, newspaper), Youn Seol(演說, speech), Houk-Myung(革命, revolution)’. The Second new ones are newly translated words created by Japanese intellectuals, including ‘Gaek-Kwan(客觀, objection), Dong-San(動産, movable assets), Jo-Hap(組合, union), Cheol-Hak(哲學, philosophy), and Hoe-Sa(會社, company)’. The third new words were born in the course of Japan's modernization, including ‘Kook-Rip(國立, national), Ki-Ho(記號, symbol), Su-Sok(手續, procedure), Chae-Bol(財閥, conglomerate), and Hak-Hoe(學會, academic society)’. These newly coined words were accepted into the Korean language before and after the enlightenment period, with the majority of them coming from Japanese. As such, the Sino-Korean words system in modern Korean language reflects the influence of the new Japanese-style Chinese words. ※ key-words:The Enlightenment Period, The New Culture, Modernization, The Newly Coined Sino-Korean Words, Mi-Sul(美術, Arts), Ja-Yu(自由, Freedom), Byeong-Won(病院, Hospital)
