시간 해석은 문장 차원의 시간 분석을 넘어서 담화에 나타난 여러 상황들 사이의 시간 관계 분석을 요구한다. 이에 이 글에서는 서사 담화를 대상으로 하여 서사 담화의 시간 관계를 결정하는 데 관여하는 다양한 요인을 제시하고 해당 요인들이 어떻게 상호작용하는지 살펴보았다. 담화를 구성하는 상황들 사이의 시간 관계는 시제나 상황유형, 관점상 및 시간 부사어에 의해 드러나며 담화 관계나 맥락 및 일반 상식에 의해서도 결정된다. 상과 관련하여서는 특히 상황이 종결적인가에 따라 선후 관계가 결정되는데, 연속한 두 문장이 모두 종결적 자질을 지니면 기본적으로 순차적 관계가 성립하지만 비종결적 상황이 포함되면 동시 또는 포함 관계를 형성한다. 한편 담화 관계와 관련하여서는 인과 관계일 경우 순차 관계가 형성되며 부연설명 관계일 때는 포함 관계가 형성된다. 이러한 시간 관계 결정 요인들 사이에는 우선 순위가 성립하는데 시간 부사어 표지나 담화 관계에 근거한 해석은 종결성 자질에 따른 시간 해석에 우선하여 적용된다.
Abstract
The study of temporal interpretation in discourse requires a different perspective from that of approaches to the interpretation of tense in sentences. This paper aimed to identify factors, that determine the temporal relations in discourse and present their manner of interaction, and to propose the temporal system applying in discourse. The temporal relations in discourse are interpreted based on tense markers, aspect markers, and temporal adverbs and are determined by the discourse relationship, world knowledge, and context. These factors apply according to the priorities within the temporal system in discourse, i.e., temporal adverbs and discourse relationships are prioritized over aspectual factors in the interpretation of the discourse-time relationship.
