Abstract

The inclusion of students with special needs in general education is becoming more prevalent. In the present study, we examined the effects of mandatory introductory special education course on preservice teachers' perception of inclusion and identified what personal, experiential, instructional, knowledge and dispositional factors successfully predict post-students' perceptions of inclusive practices. The sample comprises of 166 students enrolled introductory special education course in 2009. A questionnaire developed by Antonak and Larrivee(1995) was adapted and was used to measure students' opinion relative to inclusion. Students' personal, disabilities-related experiential, instructional, knowledge and dispositional variables were collected also. Data were analyzed using paired sample t-tests and a multiple regression analysis. The results of this investigation demonstrated that (1) students' perception of inclusion improved through the implementation of special education related teacher prepration course, and (2) experiential, instructional, knowledge and dispositional factors predicted students' perception about inclusion over personal predictor variables. Implications for practices and future research were discussed.
