초록
The achievement of students from culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) backgrounds has received close attention lately due to their languishing language and academic performance in the Korean school system. While nationwide data show a significant increase in this student population in Korea, the numbers reported are likely to either underestimate or overestimate the true population due to significant variations in the definitions and criteria used to identify students who are eligible for special education support. This paper aimed to explore the causes and impacts of misidentification made by general education teachers and to provide specific directions for educators on how to effectively collaborate to help these students in school settings. A conceptual review based on critical perspectives was presented for classroom teachers with the aim of reducing inappropriate referral of CLD students to special education in the Korean context. Useful tips were discussed based on the utilization of Response to Intervention (RtI) and classroom level checklists.
Abstract
The achievement of students from culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) backgrounds has received close attention lately due to their languishing language and academic performance in the Korean school system.
