Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to implement a balanced reading intervention program using games to children with ADHD tendency and reading difficulties to find out the effect on word reading and reading fluency. Method: The participants in this study were two first-grade and one second-grade elementary school students with ADHD tendencies who had not achieved Hanguel understanding. In this study, an balanced reading intervention program using games was developed. The program consisted of step-by-step reading texts applying a whole-language approach, along with Hangul consonant and vowel instruction and reading-ability-enhancement games applying a phonics approach based on stages of Hangul reading development. This study applied a mixed research method. To confirm the effectiveness of the program, quantitative studies using multi-probe designs and qualitative analyses were conducted to observe the reading development process. The intervention was conducted for 40 minutes per session, four times a week, for a total of 20 sessions. Results: All study participants demonstrated improvements in word decoding, progressing from letters without final consonants to letters with one final consonant, and finally to letters with two final consonants. Furthermore, all participants demonstrated improvements in reading fluency. Conclusion: A balanced reading intervention program using games is effective in improving word decoding and reading fluency to children with ADHD tendency and reading difficulties, demonstrating the need for a differentiated reading intervention program that considers their characteristics.
