Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the influence developmental network characteristics have on career identity and career adaptability, the two meta-competencies required for a protean career, and empirically analyze the mediator effect developmental functions have in the process. The study was conducted on employees who have been working at domestic large corporations for more than two years. Descriptive statistics analysis, factorial analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and mediator analysis were conducted using the SPSS 18.0 statistic program to validate the research questions. The results obtained can be summarized like the following. The average tie strength was found to positively affect career identity and career adaptability. In addition, the influence the average tie strength has on career identity was fully mediated by career support, psycho-social support, and role modeling, while the influence on career adaptability was partially mediated by career support. Organization heterogeneity, the range of network, negatively influenced career adaptability and was partially mediated by career support. Finally, the paper concludes that the closer relationship employees will have with developers, the higher and greater level of career support, psycho-social support, and role modeling they will get from the developers. Moreover, they will increase the level of career identity and career adaptability through such the development functions. The relationship with developers inside the organization rather than outside will also reap the higher level of career adaptability through greater career support.
