Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among developmental network characteristics(i.e. Network Diversity: ND) and Relationship Strength: RS), developmental functions(i.e. a Career Function: CF , Psychosocial Function: PF, and Role Modeling: RM), and career success(i.e. Subjective Career Success: SCS and Objective Career Success: OCS) and also identify the statistical difference of the structural relationships between a group preferring horizontal developmental network and a group preferring high power distance as a developmental network. The participants of the study was R & D male researchers working in an auto company. Based on the literature review, 13 hypotheses were proposed and path analysis was conducted. This study found that RS significantly influence CF, PF, and RM, while ND slightly but significantly influence PF and RM. Moreover, only RM impact on SCS and OCS is influenced by only SCS. As a result of comparative analysis between two groups, only a group preferring high power distance as a developmental network shows similar results as a hypnotized model and the other group did not show effects of developmental functions on career success. Therefore, this study suggests that male working group like R &D group in the company A, needs more tight relationship between senior and junior researchers to facilitate their career development and emphasizes the importance of role-modeling for individuals to build a right career direction and obtain right knowledge and skills
