근대 중국의 세계주의와 그 딜레마 - 캉유웨이와 량치차오를 중심으로

21세기 들어 캉유웨이는 대륙 신유가뿐만 아니라, 유교적 대동세계나 문명국가에서 세계질서의 아이디어를 구하려는 좌우의 많은 지식인들의 주목을 받았다. 본 논문은 캉유웨이에게 과연 중국 지식계가 기대한 사상 자원이 있는지의 문제와 아울러, 캉유웨이 사상의 세계주의에 대비하여 량치차오 사상을 국가주의라고 평가하는 것에 대해 질문을 던지려 한다. 국가주의/세계주의 대비 속에는, 근대 이래 중국이 부강한 민족국가 건설을 위해 량치차오의 국가주의를 추구했다면, 부강을 실현한 21세기에는 국가의 차원을 넘어 세계 대국이 되기 위해 캉유웨이의 세계주의를 추구해야 한다는 뜻이 내재되어 있었다. 량치차오의 세계주의 국가는 분명 국가 폐지를 전제로 하는 캉유웨이의 유토피아보다 훨씬 현실적인 생각이었다. 하지만 국제연맹이 유명무실한 기구로 전락하고, 열강들이 여전히 자국의 이익을 우선하는 상황에서는, 세계주의 국가 역시 기대하기 힘든 일이었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 당시 량치차오를 비롯한 중국 지식인들의 담론에 세계주의적 지향이 강하게 나타나고 있는데, 이러한 현상은 21세기 중국의 세계주의를 이해하기 위해 반드시 탐구해야 할 문제라고 할 것이다.
Abstract
In the 21st century, Kang Youwei has attracted the attention of many intellectuals on both sides of the world seeking ideas of world order in the Confucian world and civilized countries as well as on the continent neo-confucianism. In this paper, I would like to ask the question of whether or not Kang Youwei has the ideological resources expected by the Chinese intellectual community, and to evaluate the Liang Qichao thought as nationalism in preparation for the cosmopolitanism of Kang Youwei thought. In contrast to nationalism / cosmopolitanism, if China pursued the nationalism of Liang Qichao for the construction of a strong nation state since the modern era, in the 21st century when the richness was realized, it was necessary to pursue the cosmopolitanism of Kang Youwei in order to become a world power beyond the national level. Liang Qichao's cosmopolitan state was clearly a much more realistic idea than Kang Youwei's utopia, which presupposes the abolition of the state. But with the League of Nations reduced to a nominal institution and the powers still putting their own interests first, a cosmopolitan state was also hard to expect. Nevertheless, the discourse of Chinese intellectuals including Liang Qiqiao at that time strongly shows a cosmopolitan orientation, and this phenomenon must be explored in order to understand Chinese cosmopolitanism in the 21st century.
