National character discourse is a important topic of modern thought in china. recently Lydia Liu raised a question of this matter, and many disputants have participated in the debate. Some of them criticize that Lydia Liu passed over the reality of national character criticized by Lu Xun and carelessly considered it as a myth. But national character discourse is very complicated. First, that has close connection with modern nation-state system. In China, it also is a part of making nation. Secondly it is based on the hierarchy of modern civilization formed by orientalism in the world. Therefore it is not only entangled with some ideology of doubtful nationalism, racism, militarism and cultural nationalism, but also is supported by such modern learnings and sciences as geography, ethnology, national history etc. These problematic feature of national character discourse show itself in the beginning phase. Particularly, national character discourse in china have formed since the early 20th century, Liang Qichao played a leading role of its formation. So this article will focus on Liang Qichao's discussion, analyze the context of history and knowledge of national character discourse.
