Abstract

This paper examines Liu Xie’s paired dreams of “colored clouds like brocade” and “carrying vermilion ritual vessels while following Confucius southward” in the Preface to The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons, interpreting them as embodying the dual logic of Six Dynasties dream culture: divinely endowed literary brilliance and the metaphor of the Mandate of Heaven. Drawing on semiotic analysis and historical typology, and based on 187 dream accounts in Six Dynasties official histories, the study proposes a fivefold typology—imperial, literary-talent, portent, fetal, and Buddhist–Daoist dreams—and shows how dreams functioned symbolically to construct political legitimacy, confer cultural capital, and articulate collective anxieties. The findings demonstrate that dreams, as a crucial discursive practice, transformed individual identity concerns and political claims into public narratives open to interpretation and transmission. Liu Xie’s paired dreams epitomize this process, converting private vision into public authority through the discursive network of “divine literary endowment and Heaven’s mandate,” and offering a new framework for understanding how Six Dynasties dream writing encoded power.
