Abstract
The emergence of Generation Beta in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution calls for a new vision of future talent. This study aims to explore the potential of design education as a key strategy for cultivating such future competencies. Using an integrative literature review, it compares and analyzes the core frameworks of future competency education—namely the OECD Learning Compass 2030 and the IB Learner Profile—in relation to the direction of the 2022 Revised Korean National Curriculum and multiple empirical studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of design education. The findings reveal that the competencies emphasized by both the OECD and IB—student agency, reflection, creative thinking, and collaboration—are fundamentally aligned with the core values of design education, such as problem-solving and integrative thinking, as evidenced in the 2022 curriculum and prior research. Based on these theoretical and empirical grounds, this study argues that design education serves as a central strategy for fostering future competencies in Generation Beta, and provides practical implications for implementing competency-based education as envisioned in Korea’s 2022 curriculum.
