Abstract
Writer Nakajima Atsushi's life was largely shaped by the trajectory of Japan's imperial acquisition of territories. He spent most of his youth in colonial Korea until he was sent to the main islands in 1926 to pursue higher education. In 1941,the adult Nakajima traveled to Palau in the South Pacific, then under Japan's jurisdiction, to participate in a Japanese language textbook project sponsored by the Japanese South Seas Agency. Reflecting his extensive overseas experiences, Nakajima's fictional works set in colonial Korea and the South Seas abound. This paper examines Nakajima’s three stories based on colonial Korea to see how coloniality is represented. More importantly, the colonial “contact zones” (Mary L. Prat) and the “domains of intimacy”(Ann L. Stoler) illustrated in Nakajima's stories beg the question of colonizer-colonized relations and the subsequent chaos and confusion of coloniality within the growing postcolonial scholarship.
