본 연구는 한국 개신교 전래 초기에 내한하여 전도와 교육, 의료, 출판 등 다방면에서 중요한 행적을 남긴 미국 개신교 선교사 호러스 그랜트 언더우드(Horace G. Underwood, 1859~1916)가 중문 기독교 문헌을 한글로 번역했던 정황을 조명한다. 언더우드가 1886년 무렵부터 중문 기독교 문헌을 다수 번역하여 조선성교서회와 삼문활판소를 통해, 또는 개인적으로 발행했던 1890년대 중반까지로 연구의 범위를 설정한다. 먼저 언더우드가 번역한 것으로 알려진 중문 기독교 문헌을 소개하고, 그가 19세기 중국의 개항장 상하이를 중심으로 발행된 수많은 기독교 문헌 중 어떤 것을 가져다 번역했는지 선택상의 특징을 이야기한 뒤, 그가 번역에 힘쓴 동기와 중문 기독교 문헌을 입수하게 된 정황, 언더우드 주변의 번역자와 독자에 대해 논한다. 마지막으로 연구상의 난제로서 서적의 발행연도․발행처 표기가 불분명한 점, 영문․중문 제목의 일관성 결여, 그로 인해 같은 책이 다른 선교사에 의해 중복 번역되었을 가능성 등을 제시한다.
Abstract
This study shed light on the context in which Horace G. Underwood (1859- 1916), an American Protestant missionary who left important achievements in evangelism, education, medical, and publishing in Korea in the early days of Korean Protestantism. The scope of this study spans from 1886 up to the mid 1890s, when he introduced a number of Chinese Christian literature to Korea and have them translated into Korean. I provide a table of Chinese Christian texts and their Korean translations known to have been translated by H.G. Underwood to discuss some features of his selection books, how he obtained those book, what motivated him to produce those translations. In addition, attention is paid to the translators around Underwood and the readers of those books. Finally, I suggest several research conundrum, such as the unclear year and place of publication of the translations, the lack of consistency in English and Chinese titles, and the possibility of duplication of translation works by other missionaries.
