한국어 성서 형성의 기원을 찾아서 ― 초기 재한 선교회(1887-1911)의 한국어 성서 번역을 위한 조직과 원칙 그리고 실제

초기 재한 선교회는 한국어 성서 번역을 시작한 지(1887년) 무려 24 년 만인 1911년에 한국어 신구약 『성경젼셔』를 출판함으로써 성서 번역사역을 마쳤다. 한국어 성서는 한국 사회를 변화시켰고, 무엇보다도 한국 교회와 믿음의 기초를 놓았다. 그런데 재한 선교회는 한국어 성서 번역 사역을 위해서 언제부터 그리고 어떻게 체계적이고 책임 있는 조직을 운영했을까? 또한 번역자들은 성서를 번역할 때 현대적인 번역 원칙을 가지고 번역했을까? 그리고 그들은 성서 번역 과정에서 어떻게 공동 번역 작업을 진행했을까? 본 연구는 한국어 성서 번역 사역의 실질적인 핵심 세 명의 번역자, 곧 언더우드(H. G. Underwood), 게일(J. S. Gale) 그리고 레널즈(W. D. Reynolds)의 글에서 재한 선교회의 번역위원회는 성서 번역을 위해서 어떤 책임 있는 조직과 규정을 만들었으며, 어떤 성서 번역 원칙을 가지고 한국어 성서를 번역했는지, 또 어떻게 공동 작업을 해왔는지를 살펴보고, 마지막으로 재한 선교회의 한국어 성서 번역 사역의 의의와 문제점을 찾아보려고 한다.
Abstract
The Korean Bible translation work by the early Protestant missions in Korea started in 1887 and was completed in 1911. The Korean Bible changed Korean society and culture, and especially laid the foundations of the Korean church and the Christian faith. Given the importance of this undertaking, we cannot help but ask about whether and how the missionaries in Korea used any systematic and guiding principles in their Bible translation. The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze the organizations, principles and practices in the early Korean Bible translation work (1887-1911) based upon the articles of three pioneer missionaries, H. G. Underwood, J. S. Gale and W. D. Reynolds. Finally, this study emphasizes the meaning and importance of the publication of the Korean Bible and comments on the merit of Korean Bible ‘Sungkyungjeonseo(성경젼셔)’.
