Abstract

This study examines the translation policies and practices of the Korean Religious Tract Society (KRTS, present-day Christian Literature Society of Korea) from its founding in 1890 to the establishment of its editorial department in 1920, thereby laying the groundwork for research in Korean translation history and cultural history. Unlike the Bible Society, which focused exclusively on Bible translation, the Tract Society led early Christian publishing culture by translating and disseminating a wide range of Christian and educational materials in Korean, including evangelistic tracts, catechisms, hymnals, textbooks, and periodicals. Its early publications were characterized by the strategic importation and translation of Chinese Christian literature, followed by a gradual expansion into translations from English and Japanese. Due to limitations in sources, prior scholarship has not sufficiently addressed the Society’s early translation activities; this study fills that gap by tracing its translation practices at the institutional level. This approach enables analysis not only of translated products but also of the policies and motivations shaping the translation process, providing a foundation for comparative studies across periods, regions, and agents. The article is organized as follows. Chapter One introduces the study. Chapter Two analyzes the Society’s organizational structure and translation policies. Chapter Three, drawing on the Society’s catalogues, examines changes in translation routes, contents, and agents, distinguishing the early phase (1890-1909) and the transitional phase (1910-1919). Chapter Four discusses the cultural-historical implications of these findings for Korean translation history.
