미국 교회들은 조미수호통상조약이 체결된 후 조선 선교에 관심을 두었다. 언더우드는 올트만스로부터 조선 선교에 관한 이야기를 처음 들었으며, 그 사실을 미국 북 장로교회 한국 선교 제25주년 기념대회에서 회고했다. 일찍이 인도 선교를 생각하고 있던 언더우드는 신학교에 입학한 직후 선교 사역에 헌신하기로 했다. 그런데 "미국 개혁교회 해외선교부 제52차 연례 보고서"(1884)에 의하면, 그는 미국 교회가 조선에 선교사를 파송해 달라는 이수정의 요청에 반응하여, 선교사 지원서를 제출하였다. 그는 몇 차례 거절을 겪은 후 미국 북 장로교회 해외선교부로부터 조선의 개신교 첫 선교 목사로 임명되었다. 언더우드는 제4차 신학교 간 선교사 연맹 집회(1883)에 참석하여 하지와 고든의 강연을 들었다. 그들의 강연은 그에게 선교사의 자세, 특히 선교지의 부름을 구체적으로 이해하는 전기가 되었다. 그로 인해 그는 얼마 동안 선교지 문제로 갈등한 것으로 보인다. 이 글에서 그 갈등이 기존의 주장보다 앞선 시기에 게재된 이수정의 글을 읽고 해결되었음을 구명하였다. 필자는 언더우드가 선교지를 변경하게 되는 과정과 파송이 결정된 이후 조선으로 출발하는 과정을 언급하고 있는 기존의 주장을 숙고하여 분별하고자 하였다. 이 연구에 언더우드가 여동생에게 보낸 한 사신(私信)은 이전 연구에서 빠진 부분을 채우는 결정적인 사료이다. 그 편지와 편지에 묘사한 군사시찰단과 관련된 자료들을 살펴 언더우드의 출발 일정을 확인하였다. 그 결과 샌프란시스코에서 출발한 날이 1884년 12월 31일이었다는 것과 시카고에서 일본까지 한 달여 일정은 일본 군사시찰단과 일치하고 있음을 밝혔다. 이 논문은 언더우드가 선교지를 조선으로 결정하는 과정과 파송 과정에 관한 기존 연구를 궁구하고, 그의 명확한 미국 출발 시점을 일본 군사시찰단의 관련 자료를 이용하여 분별한 것이다. 언더우드에 관한 많은 연구가 있으나 불가피하게 간과되거나 누락된 부분이 여전히 많이 있다. 따라서 누적된 연구 논문이 많은 경우라 할지라도 기존 연구의 재고와 새로운 연구는 유효하다 하겠다.
Abstract
Horace G. Underwood (1859.7.19-1916.10.12) initially considered going to India, until some time before he graduated from the New Brunswick Theological Seminary. In the early part of his first year in the Seminary, he determined to devote his whole life to foreign missionary labor. However, he struggled to decide which field he ought to enter after attending the 4th Inter-Seminary Missionary Alliance Convention (1883). A few months later, in response to Rijutei’s appeal, he applied to the Board of Foreign missions to be appointed and sent as a clerical missionary to Korea. This article investigates the presence of the Japanese officers who appear in his letter and the idea that they took the train together based on a comparison of the records written by Nozu Michitsura (1841~1908) and Underwood’s letter. The statement that they would be taking a steam ship together in San Francisco is also verified as a historical fact. Thus, the paper examines the process by which Underwood came to choose Korea as his mission field and left the United States to work as a missionary. Although much research has already been carried out on Underwood, many aspects have unavoidably been overlooked or left out. In such cases, it can prove fruitful to both re-examine the existing research and to conduct new research.
