이 논문은 1880년에 간행된 <한불자전>과 1890년에 간행된 <한영자전>의 로마자 표기법과 이후의 로마자 표기법의 전개과정을 살펴보고 로마자 표기법과 관련된 주요 쟁점들에 대해서 검토해 보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이 두 사전은 한국어의 로마자 표기를 최초로 체계적이고도 종합적으로 시도하였다. 이 사전에서 이루어진 표기 체계와 방법이 이후의 로마자 표기법 전개과정에서 수용과 변용이 이루어진다. 한국어를 로마자 표기할 때 대상, 목적, 방법이 중요한 문제로 제기되는데 이러한 문제에 대한 최초의 답을 제시한 이 두 사전은 오늘날의 로마자 표기법에도 큰 영향을 미치고 있다. <한불자전>은 기본적으로 전자법에 입각해 한글 및 한국어의 음운체계에 맞게 로마자 표기를 시도하였다. 특수문자 및 부가기호 사용을 최소화하되 한국어의 음운과 음운현상이 표기에 반영되도록 노력하였다. <한영자전>은 전음법을 기초로 외국인의 귀에 들리는 소리를 충실하게 반영하는 데 초점을 맞추었다. 이후의 로마자 표기법은 전음법을 기본으로 하되 외국인뿐만 아니라 한국인들에게도 이해와 수용이 가능한 방안을 채택하고 있다. 또한 특수문자나 부가기호를 없애는 방향으로 정착되었다. 이러한 로마자 표기법의 정착은 <한불자전>과 <한영자전>에 힘입은 바 크다는 점에서 두 사전의 가치가 크다고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the romanization system and its development in <Dictionnaire Coréen-Français 1880> and <Korean-English Dictionary 1890>. Also, it illustrates how the problems of Romanization arose upon the publication of the two dictionaries. These two dictionaries were the first systematic and comprehensive attempt to romanize Korean to Roman alphabet. The romanization system and method made in this dictionary are accepted and transformed in the process of developing romanization system. The object, purpose, and method are raised as important questions when romanizing Korean, and these two dictionaries, which provided the first answer to these problems, have a great influence on today’s romanization system. Based on transliteration method <Dictionnaire Coréen-Français> attempted to romanize according to the phonological system and phonological rule of Korean. Efforts were made to minimize the use of special characters and additional symbols, but to reflect Korean phonology and phonological phenomena. <Korean-English Dictionary> focused on solely reflecting the sounds heard in the ears of foreigners on the basis of the transcription method. Later, romanization systems were based on the transcription method, but adopted a method that could be understood and accepted by Koreans as well as foreigners. In addition, it was settled in the direction of eliminating special characters or additional symbols. The settlement of these Roman notations is large in value because of the great contribution from <Korean-English Dictionary> and <Korean-English Dictionary>.
