A Comparison on the lexical entries of Dictionaire Coréen-Français(1880) and A Korean-English Dictionary(1897)

This paper aims to clarify the differences in the constitutions of Korean entries in the two 19C bilingual dictionary – Dictionaire Coréen-Français(1880) and A Korean-English Dictionary(1897). To summarize the results of analysis, Gale, the editor of A Korean-English Dictionary(1897), has eliminated about 1/3 of the entries in Dictionaire Coréen-Français(1880) and added about the same amounts in his dictionary. The lexical characteristics of the added entries can be summarized as follows. ① chino-korean words and phrases occupy about 60% of added entries, ② words which are critical to understand Korean culture in wide ranges take the possession of 10% of added entries, ③ onomatopoeic words which are to be used as adjectices with derivative suffix ᐨ대다, ᐨ거리다, ᐨ스럽다, about the rario of 3.5% of the added entries.
