Abstract

This article describes the Korean Film Archive (KOFA)'s Oral Archive of Film Personnel accumulated over 20 years and explores ways to utilize it. The KOFA's film personnel oral archive can be viewed as a public good produced by a public institution and an in-depth oral interview on the topic of Korean cinema and Korean film personnel. This article describes the scale and nature of the vast oral archive, which was recorded by 225 people over 1,200 hours, and suggests ways to utilize oral history research. First, I examine the characteristics and directions of thematic oral history, a film that is an active collaboration between interviewee and interviewer, and then I organize the topical oral histories accumulated in the oral history archive. The second, “Changes in Imported Foreign Films in the 1960s and 1990s”, examines the impact of policy directions such as the Film Act, the Performance Act, the Phonogram and Video Act, changes in the theater industry and environment, and changes in television on the importation and acceptance of foreign films. Third, I traced the history of projectionists by focusing on the rise of small theaters, import liberalization, and direct distribution of American films as key factors in the changing theatrical landscape of the 1980s and 1990s. The results reveal that the rise of small theaters, which had a major impact on the changing theater landscape since the 1980s, played an important role in the rise of local projectionists. Oral histories of projectionists explained another factor in the rise of small theaters not found in the literature. The oral history of a provincial projectionist not only serves as a complementary source for explaining the changes in the theater landscape in the 1980s and 1990s, but also demonstrates the possibility of writing history by subordinate subjects and recovering memories and experiences in an area that has been neglected in film history research.
