서양 선교사와 근대한국 민속연구 제1의 물결

한국 근대민속학의 발생학적인 기원을 일본제국이 뿌린 불량한 식민주의의 싹을 뽑아버리고 건강한 민족주의 영양분으로 품종 개량ㆍ접붙이기해서 얻은 달고도 쓴 열매로 인식하는 것이 국내 학계의 지배적인 연구 경향이다. 이런 시각에서 일본 관제 학자와 한국인 지식인에 앞서서 한국 민속자료를 채집ㆍ탐구했던 서양 선교사들의 학문적인 성과는 과소평가 되거나 무시되었다. 근대한국 민속연구의 초창기를 선도했던 서양 선교사의 역할과 학문적인 영향을 재조명함으로써 선행연구의 양적인 공백과 질적인 약점을 보완ㆍ수정하려는 것이 이 논문의 기본목표이다. 본문은 두 부분으로 구성된다. 전반부에서는 19세기 말~20세기 초에 일단의 서양 선교사들이 어떻게 근대한국 민속연구의 기초공사에 주춧돌을 보탰는지 속담, 민담, 세시풍속, 신화, 무속 등 여러 분야에 남긴 발자취를 추적한다. 후반부에서는 한국 근대민속학의 창출과 개척에 있어 핵심적인 역할을 했지만 대부분 선행연구에서 간과되었던 조지 존스(G. H. Jones)와 호머 헐버트(H. B. Hulbert)에 초점을 맞춰 이들이 생산했던 학문적 성과와 그 역사적 유산을 되짚어 본다. 주요 분석 사료는 한국(조선)에 체류했던 서양 선교사들이 간행ㆍ참여했던 영어 월간지/학술지 『코리안 리포지터리』, 『코리아 리뷰』, 『영국왕립아세아학회 한국지부 트랜잭션』 등이다. 본 논문의 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 서양 선교사들이 남긴 한국 민속연구의 발자취는 생략하거나 무시해도 될 타자의 시각이 아니라 꼼꼼히 재발견되어야 할 한국 근대민속사의 전사(前史) 또는 도입부이다. 둘째, 알렌, 아담스, 존스, 헐버트 등은 전통과 근대, 문명과 야만, 중심ㆍ중앙과 지방ㆍ향토, 이성과 미신, 기록문화와 구술문화 등의 이분법적인 구별 짓기를 통해 한국민속을 인류 문명의 진화론적인 연쇄 사슬에 꿰맞춰 넣는 서구중심주의적 사고방식에서 벗어나지 못했다. 셋째, 서양 선교사가 선창했던 ‘근대한국 민속연구 제1의 물결’과 서로 밀고 당기며 일본 관제 학자가 식민 담론으로 (재)창출한 ‘제1.5의 물결’과 한국 지식인이 민족 담론으로 다시 띄운 ‘제2의 물결’이 만드는 단절과 연속의 주름살을 실증적으로 관찰해야 할 매우 어렵고도 절실한 과제가 우리를 기다리고 있다.
Abstract
A predominant view on the genesis of modern Korean Folklore is that it was an unfortunate queer product of competition and corroboration between Japanese bureaucrat-scholars and Korean nationalist intellectuals. Haunted by the ghost of origins, most scholars tend to ignore or underestimate the academic achievements of Western missionaries who collected and studied Korean folk materials ahead of Japanese and Korean scholars. This article intends to rediscover and reappraise Western missionaries’ indispensable contributions to collecting and researching Korean folklore during its very embryological stage. The main body of the article consists of two parts. The first half traces how Western missionaries from the late 19th century to the early 20th century had laid the groundwork for the birth of modern Korean folklore in the various fields such as proverbs, folktales, traditional festivals, and shamanism. The latter half examines academic legacy and influence of G. H. Jones and H. B. Hulbert, both of whom played critical roles in taking shapes of modern Korean folklore, but overlooked and underestimated by most previous studies. The main sources of analysis are the English monthly/academic magazines/journal published in Korea, including The Korean Repository, The Korea Review, and Transactions of the Korea Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society. The author arrives at the following conclusions. First, Western missionaries were very important personnel who had constructed solid and respectable foundation of Korean folklore fields and thus worth mentioning in historiography. Second, most Western missionaries discussed in the article were not value-neutral observers but shared Western-centric prejudice that evaluated peculiar Korean folklore/tradition as inferior in the chain of cultural evolution by distinguishing modern-central-rational Western civilization from primitive- local-superstitious-oral mentalité of ‘Koreaness’. Third, there remains a very difficult task of re-writing the whole genealogy of modern Korean folklore studies, which would reveal disruptive collisions and/or overlapping wrinkles existing among the First Wave launched by Western missionaries, the First-Half Wave re-fabricated by Japanese bureaucrat-scholars, and the Second Wave embraced by Korean intellectuals.
