Abstract

The knowledge of Korea as a nation started to be produced during the 1890s and the 1900s. The main agents for this knowledge production were the Japanese and Korean intellectuals. Previous studies on this topic pointed out that despite their political aims, both Japanese and Korean intellectuals ended up producing similar discourses on Korean history as they were on the same basis; namely, the Eurocentric view of civilization and the historicism. This study adds another agent to this scene, the western missionaries/scholars in Korea, and traces the relation between their discourses of Korean history with those produced by Japanese and Koreans. Focusing on Homer B. Hulbert, who created numerous texts on Korean history, it analyzes how the contemporary discourses and interpretation of Korean history by Japanese and Korean were integrated into and appropriated by Hulbert’s text. The paper demontstrates the transnational production and circulation of the discourses of Korean history. Considering how Hulbert’s discourse had a long influence in the U.S. during the twentieth century to the extent to influence the Korean Studies in the U.S., and how this transnational aspect of the discourse allowed the integration of Japanese colonial scholarship possible, it is essential to understand this early transnationality.
