Abstract

This paper examines C. Richard Rutt (1925-2011), who came to Korea in 1954 and worked as an Anglican missionary for 20 years, producing numerous works on Korean studies. In particular, it focuses on his research on Korea rather than his missionary work. There have been few studies on Rutt in this regard, and they have focused on him as a translator of classical literature, especially sijo. However, by comprehensively examining his research activities, the author argues that he was not only an outstanding translator, but also a Koreanologist who studied Korean history and culture and contributed to the development of Korean studies after liberation. As a Koreanologist, Rutt’s achievements can be summarized in four points. First of all, as a member of the Korea Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, he studied Korea based on this organization. He also contributed to its operation by serving as an officer for a long time. Secondly, he studied and translated sijo, a field that had not received much attention from Westerners because it was too difficult, and introduced it to the world. Moreover, he wrote a book which is distinct from existing travelogues of Korea written by Westerners by closely observing the Korean countryside and the lives of the Koreans living there. Finally, he shed light on the life and works of James S. Gale (1863-1937), a Canadian Presbyterian missionary, elevating him from being criticized as unsystematic in his scholarship to the status of a “missionary-scholar.”
