Abstract

During the Japanese imperialism period, Koreans living in the sphere of the former Japanese Empire outside the Korean Peninsula returned to Korea after liberation. In the international situation in which sovereign power was reorganized from the imperial-colonial order to the Cold War-nation-state order, the harms of colonial rule and the interests of the great powers surrounding the Korean Peninsula after the war intersected, the aspect surrounding the return was facing a complex phase. Crossing the borderline that crossed the Cold War between the Korean Peninsula and Japan and between the Korean Peninsula and Manchuria was also a task of committing oneself to the territory, country, and identity to which one belonged. The cholera outbreak that broke out across the Korean Peninsula in 1946 acted as a decisive obstacle to the movement of returning and bordering peoples. The return of Koreans who were working in Japan was hindered by cholera. Also, one of the important reasons why Koreans in northeast China chose to settle there rather than return home was the cholera epidemic that swept the entire Yanbian region around Tumun. In the process, the return of Koreans, who were not even given full nationality, was swept away by the international reality and the harsh post-war East Asian order. It was the media of the time that reacted most sensitively to the fear brought about by the infectious disease, and literature sheds light on the chaos of the system and order brought about by this fear. In a series of works depicting Koreans returning from Manchuria, Yeom Sang-seop faces an infectious disease called cholera. What is required of Koreans returning from Manchuria is to verify their ideas and whether they have been vaccinated against cholera. Quarantine is working on both sides of ideology and infectious disease. The border isn’t the only place to remember when it comes to infectious disease cholera. It is important to remember that the political upheaval in Daegu and Jeju after liberation was directly related to cholera. The people who had to fall again due to illness following hunger - their won and the breath of Han gathered to bring about the storm of October. In South Korea, the region that showed the most severe morbidity and mortality compared to the number of residents was Jeju Island. The report of the US Military Government determined that the cholera outbreak in Jeju was caused by the relaxation of quarantine measures and the smuggling and smuggling of infected refugees at will. Great Famine and Jeju’s economy fell into a state of death due to manufacturing shutdowns, high unemployment, and failure of rice policies. And this economic situation and the cholera crisis are closely linked to the Jeju 4.3 incident that followed. In the landscape of Jeju after liberation, which Hyun Ki-young illuminates in his works, there is always a picture of a village that has been horrified by cholera. This study illuminates a series of events that provoked agitation in the borderlands of the liberation period, Daegu, and Jeju in the contemporary political and social context, and analyzed the discourses of literature and media staring at them.
