Abstract
This paper is a thematic study centering on the literary creations like novels, plays, poems, and essays within the Chinese-language works released by Jang Jirak (1905–1938) during 1929-1930, when he was engaged in the underground work of the Communist Party of China in Beiping. Under the pseudonyms “Yan Guang” and “Li Yanguang”, these works were published in well-known modern Chinese media such as Ta Kung Pao, Xin Dong Fang, and San Min Ban Monthly. Firstly, these writings emphasized resistance against imperialism and the international solidarity of small and weak ethnic groups. Secondly, while depicting the hardships of the lower-class people, they pointed out the incompleteness of the Chinese revolution and stressed the necessity of continuous revolution. Thirdly, through anecdote-style essays, they criticized the lack of social responsibility in the Chinese national character that only prioritized personal interests, traditional customs, and the harm of religion, and simultaneously reflected on the social function of literature and art. Fourthly, through some essays and initial works, they revealed the loneliness, hopelessness, and self-awareness of a stateless person and an existential individual. The literary creations of Jang Jirak during this period are of great significance. They not only show the intertextuality with his autobiography “Song of Ariran” and the Chinese reality of that era but also display his various aspects and inner self as a professional revolutionary, a humanist, and an existential individual.
