초록

After the Cultural Revolution, many Chinese elder intellectualspublished their memoirs on the past. They have lived throughvarious historical periods ― The warlord era, the reign of theNational Party, the anti-Japanese national liberation war, and thecommunist China. Their abundant experiences helped createdifferent dimensions of self-reflections on modern history. Zhao Dan, Ba Jin, Xia Yan are selected as the subjects of thisstudy, because they represent three different Chinese modernintellectuals. In October 1980, Zhao wrote an essay titled 「There is no hopein art and literature with too much interference」 for the People’sDaily. This essay influenced the hearts of many artists andintellectuals. Zhao Dan expressed his indignations toward the national ideology through this essay, and won the positiveresponses of many intellectuals. Ba Jin showed a new level of indignation. He had not onlycriticized the national ideology, but also repented his wrongdoing inhis essay, 『Sui Xiang Lu』. As a result, his way of expressingindignation was considered a higher level of articulating feelings. Xia Yan is a traditional pro-government intellectual. He believedthat the communist revolution is the rising trend at the time, anddevoted his life in the revolution. Over the years, he found outthat the communist party betrayed him and the comrades, andexpressed his anger toward the national ideology through his essayand memoir. But his indignation has never strayed out of thecommunist ideology. This paper includes the studies of three Chinese elderintellectuals’ indignations. The objective is to examine theirdifferent ways of expression, by comparing the similarities anddifferences of their ways of showing indignation, and how thepublic perceives this nowadays. A close study of their ways ofarticulating indignation will help understand the meaning that theChinese elder intellectuals try to convey.
