Abstract

This study analyzes the 5th-6th grade textbook “Elementary School Changa” published by the colonial government in 1941 to examine how the Japanese government embodied its intended nationalist ideology. Typically, textbooks from the late colonial period are perceived as problematic for their political and dogmatic songs that praise the “emperor” and the waging of war. In reality, however, the Changa textbooks were organized in a system that cross-arranged political and lyrical songs sequentially. This was intended to take control of the child's inner world through the principle of sameness that lyrical poetry strives for, and to make the child naturally accept nationalism as an ideology. On the other hand, the Changa textbooks also attempted to shift children's gaze from Joseon to Japan by utilizing light images symbolizing “tenno” and “national culture. By depicting the light image and the direction of the gaze as centered on Japan, the children were encouraged to accept Joseon domination and Chinese invasion as natural, as if the sun rises in the eastern sea where Japan is located. Also, by aestheticizing death, it was suggested that only through death in war could the imaginary and collective existence of the “nation” be attained. In the end, not only political and dogmatic songs constituted the ideology of ‘nationalism,’ but by adopting a structure in which lyrical songs intersected with political songs like a ‘fingertip structure,’ the artists attempted to make children accept the ideology naturally.
