Abstract

Using regional crime statistics, this study assesses the trend and status of crimes in Korea for the 2005-2014 period, and analyzes the effect of unemployment rates on regional crime rates (=the number of crimes per 10,000 inhabitants). Empirical results indicate that the number of total crimes and five main types of crimes per 10,000 inhabitants has declined in Korea. The average number of rapes, robberies, assaults, and larcenies per 10,000 inhabitants was found to be higher in order of district-city-county. Estimation results support deterrence effect in the crime literature, and confirm a tendency of higher unemployment rates to lead to higher crime rates.
