Abstract
The primary goal of this study is to test the effect of unemployment on crime through time series analysis. Economic situation of a country continually experiences prosperity and depression across the passage of time. A sudden economic crisis swells much of the unemployed and deepened the gulf between rich and poor so that a society fears the occurrence of crime as a result of unemployment and income unevenness. However, previous studies of unemployment and crime relations concluded that it is difficult to clearly understand its relationships since the rate of unemployment may increase criminal motivation or decrease opportunities of crime. This study in order to broaden the understanding of U-C relations attempts to analyses ARIMA time series analysis by using the 1995 to 2005 data including unemployment rate, income gaps, and five major crimes from Korean Bureau of National Statistic. The results show that simple changes of unemployment rates across the passage of time do not have statistically significant relationships with the exception of murder. It means that unemployment may cause simultaneously even effects of criminal motivation and crime opportunity. Next, IMF economic crisis in Korea which rapidly increased the rate of unemployment during this period increased assault, murder, robbery but no effects on rape, and larceny. The rate of income gaps between rich and poor from 1995 to 2005 only increased the number of murder cases although the correlation matrix has shown positive relationships with all types of crime. In sum, this study has revealed that unemployment could increase the cases of murder, robbery, and assault since unemployment may stimulate criminal motivation rather than the opportunity of crime. For larceny and rape, unemployment fails to show significant relationships with them because of simultaneous impacts on criminal motivation and crime opportunity.
