Abstract
The translated works of Shakespeare into Korean have been chiefly done by male translators for a long time. Because of this reason, Shakespeare’s works have many patriarchal elements, and this has made audiences read translated works that have biased viewpoints for a long period of time. Accordingly, this study intends to examine how sexist words were translated in the work through comparison with a Korean version of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Accordingly, the paper attempts to identify how the translations were carried out based on the gender of translators and their research tendencies. As a result of the analysis, it can be seen that male translators carried out translations while expression sexist words directly, yet female translators expressed sexist language more indirectly so that the sexist factors of the text might not be as easily revealed. Therefore, contemporary translation no longer adheres to traditional concepts of word-to-word translation but acknowledges the power relationships hiding in the text. Given this, translators should pay more attention to various emerging translations and adopt contemporary phraseology.
