정치적 실천의 의미로 본 신독: 대학장구(大學章句) 전6장을 중심으로

본 논문은 『대학(大學)』에서의 신독(愼獨)을 수양론적인 관점이 아닌 정치적 실천의 관점에서 파악해 보는 것이 목적이다. 신독은 유학에서 중요한 개념으로 파악되어 왔는데 정현과 주희 이후로 주로 내적인 성찰을 중심으로 한 수양론적인 개념으로 설명이 되어 왔다. 하지만 공영달은 『대학』에서의 신독을 정치적 실천의 관점으로 해석한 것으로 보인다. 공영달의 해석은 정현의 해석을 이어받아 일부 수양론적인 의미를 가지고 있다. 하지만 정현 스스로 『대학』을 정치와 관련된 기록으로 보았듯이 신(愼)과 독(獨)이 가진 다양한 의미와 확장성을 고려할 필요가 있다. 따라서 신과 독을 정치적 실천의 관점에서 고찰한다면 신독이 가진 다른 의미의 가능성을 살펴볼 수 있게 된다. 정치적 실천의 관점에서 신독은 ‘혼자 있음을 경계하고 통제한다.’는 의미이다. 공동체의 선을 이루려는 지도자는 혼자 있음을 인내하고 극복하는 것이 아니다. 공동체의 선을 이루려는 지도자는 혼자 있음을 경계하고 돌파하여 적극적으로 공동체에 참여하고 공동체가 바라는 바를 그대로 드러내어 위선적이지 않은 행동을 하라는 의미로 확장할 수 있게 된다. 결론적으로 사회적 측면에서 바라본다면 통치자나 지도자의 입장에서 볼 때 공영달식의 부정 어법으로 해석하는 신독은 사람과 사람 간의 결합도를 높이는 효과가 있다. 이러한 신독에 대한 정치적 실천의 해석은 현대 시대에 1인 가구가 증가함에 따른 다양한 사회적 문제가 발생함에 따른 해결책을 제시하는 것에 있어서 새로운 관점을 제공해 줄 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine a shendu愼獨 in Daxue大學 from a pragmatic perspective rather than an idealistic perspective. shendu愼獨 has been identified as an important concept in Confucianism, and since ZhengXuan, it has been explained as a foster concept mainly focused on internal reflection. However, Kong Yingda tried to interpret shendu愼獨 in Daxue大學 from a Political Practice point of view. However, his attempt had a limitation in that he lost its consistency by following some of the ideas of ZhengXuan. Therefore, considering the scalability of various meanings of the shen愼 and du獨, if shen愼 and du獨 are considered from a Political Practice point of view, the possibility of other meanings of the shendu愼獨 can be examined. From a pragmatic point of view, shendu愼獨 can be expanded to mean that leaders who want to achieve the good of the community are not patiently enduring and overcoming the good of the community, but actively participate in the community and reveal what the community wants to be and become non-hypocritical leaders. This practical interpretation of shendu愼獨 is expected to provide a new perspective in presenting solutions to various social problems caused by the increase in single-person households in the modern era.
